After a tough loss in last Friday’s season opener vs Wildwood, the Blue Wave has been hard at work to prepare for tonight’s game at Keystone.
In the 30-2 defeat, the Wave struggled to get going, offensively. Despite some big plays on D, the offense couldn’t put any points on the board. In practice this week, the coaches looked to hone in on some of the team’s weaknesses from the past week.
Junior running back/cornerback Israel Wilcox chimed in on the offensive situation.
“First, our line needs to get better with stepping, hitching, blocking, and our quarterback needs to step into his passes, be confident when he’s throwing,” he said. “We need to hit some of our primary receivers, like Tyler (Jordan), also Kahlil Sneed. Also make quicker and smarter decisions.”
From the coaching staff’s side of things, offensive coordinator Marion Chisholm seemed very focused on spending time improving one thing this week.
“The offensive line,” Chisholm said shortly.
It seems making gains through the air, and buying the quarterback time to do it, will be a key to keeping the sticks moving, tonight.
The mental aspect usually plays a huge role in the game. Wide Receiver Tyler Jordan explained the team’s mentality heading into the game.
“We know they cheated us last year for homecoming,” said the star pass-catcher. “They beat us on our homecoming night, so our mindset is to get revenge, and go out there and play hard. We’re fresh off a loss so we’re hungry for a W, and it’s against Keystone so we know we gotta go get it.”
Quarterback Jacari Byrd also gave his input on what needs to happen to get a W.
“We need to come together as a team,” The RB turned QB said. “Sometimes we have our miscommunications, so I think we need to get our chemistry better. Emotionally, I think everybody just needs to buy into the process. You know some people they’re in it, some people they’re not. I think if everybody could buy in we could get a W.”
Teamwork and chemistry is going to be especially important, tonight. If the squad is working together, we can definitely see some of the same offensive sparks the boys showed in preseason.
Go Blue Wave!
