Boys Soccer Beats Newberry, 3-1

    Written By: Thomas Arteaga

The P.K. Yonge boys’ team looked to avenge the ladies Tuesday night against Newberry. From the opening kick, it seemed that they would accomplish just that as they secured a 3-1 victory.

They started off great, keeping the ball on Newberry’s half for a majority of the first half, yet couldn’t put a goal on the board. Newberry took advantage, and was able to get a goal in the 19th minute to take a 1-0 lead.

P.K. had opportunities to score but couldn’t get anything before the half, leaving Newberry ahead by just a single goal. But that wouldn’t be enough.

The boys turned it up a notch in the second half, helping out goalkeeper Morris “Borris” Freidin with three goals and a strong defensive stand in the latter part of the game.

“It was good. We didn’t let the ball on our half much, so I didn’t have to do much except cheer our team on for the victory,” Freidin said of the strong defense at the end. “Three goals in one half is amazing. I am so proud of us.”

A key body in that strong defense is freshman Matthew Collada, who scored one of the three goals for P.K. in the second half. The other goals were scored by senior TJ Llinas, assisted by sophomore Nicolas Collada, and sophomore Osei Richins.

The goal by Richins and two yellow cards for Newberry proved to be the dagger which led the Blue Wave to victory.

“We’re a young team, but the thing is we’re a young talented team, and that’s something to be proud of,” coach Andres Saavedra said of his team. “This team is going to be fun to watch them keep playing for many years to come, and I know they can do great things.”

The Blue Wave (2-1) next face Interlachen High School on Friday, November 18th at Interlachen High at 7 p.m.

Top Performer: Matthew Collada
